KnowEnG: Knowledge Engine for Genomics

COLLABORATORS

NIH Funded BD2K Center of Excellence

Saurabh Sinha, PhD., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

PROJECT DATES

Oct 2014 - Apr 2018

KnowEnG (“Knowledge Engine for Genomics” pronounced "knowing") Center of Excellence in Big Data Computing project is part of the NIH BD2K initiative. In this large multi-year project the Visual Analytics Group is responsible for designing and implementing the visualization and user interface, and collaborating on the engineering and design of the system architecture.

KnowEnG is a framework for biomedical scientists to access state of the art cloud-based data mining, network mining, and machine learning tools to analyze their data in the context of a massive knowledge base of community datasets. The KnowEnG analytics toolkit provides workflows that are easy to use and present complex results in clear, meaningful ways - all in an effort to empower scientists to extract the most useful insights from their experimental data. One example workflow is the Gene Set Characterization pipeline. In this interactive visualization, we support the fluid study of important genes, allowing the researcher to see how their genes “scored” against published/known information about their genes.
